US Vice-President Joe Biden arrived to Baghdad, on Tuesday, in an undeclared visit that coincides few weeks before US withdrawal from Iraq.

“Biden flew to Iraq to participate in US-Iraqi Higher Coordinating Committee’s meetings and to convene with Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri Al Maliki, Iraqi President Jalal Talabani, Iraqi Parliament Speaker Osama Al Nujaifi as well as other Iraqi politicians,” an official from the White House reported.

US Ambassador James Jeffrey and US Forces Commander in Iraq General Lloyd Austin, in addition to American diplomats, received Biden at Baghdad International Airport.
“Biden is due to address a ceremony held in honor of US and Iraqi soldiers’ sacrifices and accomplishments,” the White House official added.

“President Obama’s administration kept its promises in Iraq,” the official said noting that “violence decreased in the last two years to its lowest levels since 2003.”

US Vice-President Joe Biden was due to visit Iraq on November 5 but the trip was postponed for unknown reasons.
Biden’s visit to Iraq coincides with the escalation of political crisis between Iraqiya List headed by Iyad Allawi and State of Law coalition headed by Nuri Al Maliki. It also coincides with the increase of security incidents especially following Monday’s explosion that occurred near parliament building in the Green Zone central Baghdad.
Biden had visited Iraq in January and discussed with Iraqi officials the political developments in the country and the US withdrawal.
