BAGHDAD, Dec. 13 (AKnews) – Iraq will host 20 internationals exhibtions and trade fairs in 2012.
It remained unclear if the decision of the Iraqi Trade Ministry was based on a demand of foreign companies to attend these conference.
Sadiq Sultan, general manager of the Exhibtions Comany in the Ministry, said, “The exhibitions attract international companies to enter the Iraqi market, especially in the fields of construction, agriculture, industry and investment.”
Sultan spoke on the occasion of the Baghdad International Development and Housing Fair that started started yesterday. 210 companies from Lebanon, Syria, India, Italy, Malaysia, U.K., the United Arab Emirates, Turkey and Iran are allegedly participating in the exhibition.
“The exhibition will continue for four days and a number of important construction agreements will be signed between international companies and ministries and between international and local companies,” Sultan said.
Iraq has suffers from dilapidated infrastructure as a result of long years of war. Its efforts to attract capital and investors are hampered by the unstable security situation in addition to rampant corruption.
Economists criticize the Iraqi government’s performance in addressing the housing crisis since it does not have a clear strategy although more than 300 foreign companies specialized in building residential units were attracted to resolve the crisis.
