UN raises new concern over Iraq's tensions

New York - The United Nations issued Wednesday a fresh appeal for Iraqi parties to resolve peacefully their internal problems as the country's political stalemate and sectarian violence continued.

The UN special envoy for Iraq, Martin Kobler, made the appeal after separate meetings with senior officials of the Kurdistan region and Iraqi President Jalal Talabani, urging them to 'to work together in the spirit of partnership and resolve their differences through 'meaningful dialogue,' the UN said.

Kobler held talks with Talabani Wednesday after meetings Tuesday with Masoud Barzani, president of the Kurdistan Region, and Kurdish parliament speaker Kamal Kirkouki.

On Tuesday, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon issued a statement calling for Iraq to make a fresh start following the departure of US troops from the country and to strengthen their democratically elected political institutions.

Iraq has been shaken by a series of major attacks in recent weeks, including suicide bombings that killed more than 60 people and wounded more than 180 others in Baghdad.
