Iraqi federalism could cause civil war, Al-Maliki warns

BAGHDAD, Feb 11 (KUNA) -- Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki on Saturday warned of an imminent civil war if federalism is applied to the country's regions, ahead of a planned state provincial border demarcation.
The formation of provinces should be carried out after internal borders are drawn up and pending issues in this regard are finalised, he said in a speech delivered during anniversary celebrations for his party.
The federal system, at the current stage, could lead to discord and those calling for such a system will lose out, becoming a part of a civil war, he suggested.
Al-Maliki called for Iraq's patience over the matter, in wait for the border draw-up plans to be completed by the parliament, as per the request of President Jalal Talabani.
