Independent MP Bassem El-Khashan confirmed on Tuesday that Parliament Speaker Mohamed Al-Halbousi will face prison soon.
Al-Khoshani said that “Sunni and Shi’ite forces lead a wide parliamentary movement to remove Al-Halbousi from his position.” He pointed out that “Al-Halbousi represents the largest bloc of corruption and violation of law and constitution, as he committed major mistakes, including breaking the constitutional oath and disrupting the work of the parliament for several months.”
He added, "The isolation of Al-Halbousi became imminent due to the discontent of the Shiite forces, most notably the Al-Fateh Alliance," noting that "Al-Halbousi will face a prison sentence for violating the constitution after his removal from the presidency of Parliament."
The leader of the Alliance of Representatives, MP Jawad al-Moussawi, had previously reported collecting signatures for more than 130 deputies who wished to remove Speaker of Parliament Muhammad Al-Halbousi from his post.
