U.S. forces out by December 20th
BAGHDAD, Dec. 7 (AKnews) – The last remaining 10,000 U.S. troops will be gone from Iraq by Dec. 20 according to the Security and Defense Committee of the Iraqi Council of Representatives.
The few American soldiers left in the country have a deadline of Dec. 31 to leave the country.
The Vice-Chairman of the Committee Iskandar Wattout told AKnews that the Iraqi security forces have the ability to keep the stability in the country after the departure of U.S. Military operations must change, turning to proactive operations that target terrorist groups he added.
Following the car bomb attack outside the Council of Representatives in Baghdad’s Green Zone, the first since 2007, the abilities and loyalties of Iraqi forces has been called into question.
The car bomb on Nov. 29 was either intended for the Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki or the Council Speaker Osama al-Najaifi. It killed one security officer and wounded several others.
The Iraqi government signed a bilateral accord with Washington in 2008 under which it was agreed that U.S. forces would withdraw completely from Iraq by the end of 2011.
Under the same agreement the Iraqi government pledged to develop and apply a law of national reconciliation to include all Iraqis in the country’s administration without exception.
