The United Nations High Commissioner for Iraq confirmed today, Thursday (7 May 2020), its willingness to help identify opportunities and address challenges, and to work in partnership with Iraqis to build a prosperous and stable future for their country.
The Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Iraq, Jenin Hennes-Blackshart, welcomed the fact that the House of Representatives had given confidence to Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi and the majority of his cabinet.

Blackshart urged the completion of the formation of the cabinet, to enable the new government to move quickly to address the growing security, social, political, economic and health challenges.

"The government faces an uphill battle and there is no time to spare. Facing the economic crisis that has worsened under the Covid 19 pandemic and falling oil prices is a top priority, but other long-standing challenges must be addressed without delay, which include providing adequate public services, fighting corruption and strengthening Good governance, as well as justice and accountability. "

Blackshart reaffirmed the continued support of the United Nations to the Iraqi government in addressing these challenges.

"The new Iraqi government must move forward to make tangible change. The challenges are many, and so are the opportunities. The United Nations is ready to help identify opportunities and address the challenges, and to work in partnership with Iraqis to build a prosperous and stable future for their country."
