Permanent Representative of Iraq to the United Nations, Ambassador Muhammad Bahr Al-Ulum, delivered the speech of Iraq on behalf of Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi at the Security Council session to discuss the Secretary-General’s report on Iraq, and to listen to the briefing by the Special Representative of the Secretary-General and the head of an assistance mission Iraq (UNAMI) Jenin Hennes Blackshart.
"The permanent ambassador of Iraq to the United Nations, Muhammad Bahr al-Ulum, demonstrated during the speech of Iraq in the Security Council session that the wave of demonstrations that broke out in Iraq is an expression of a case," Foreign Ministry spokesman Ahmed al-Sahaf said in a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA) today. Bahr al-Ulum explained during the speech, that " The priorities of the Iraqi government are to intensify efforts to confront the Corona pandemic, to confine arms to the state, to promote the rule of law, to draft an exceptional budget draft that strengthens the ability to respond to financial and economic crises, and to launch and sponsor a comprehensive national dialogue to achieve the demands of the demonstrators.
Noting that "the most important government priorities are to release salaries without delay, compensate the families of the martyrs and wounded from the demonstrators, and form a committee of experts to support the High Independent Electoral Commission in its efforts to organize early elections, and the formation of a special committee to prepare for strategic negotiations with the United States of America."
The Permanent Representative noted in the speech the efforts of the government to combat terrorism, calling on the international community to support Iraq in this regard.
He pointed out that "Iraq places in the priorities of its foreign policy the enhancement of opportunities for cooperation with neighboring countries and the international community."
Bahr Al-Uloom expressed, "Iraq aspires to obtain the support of the Security Council for the new government in facing the challenges, especially the Corona pandemic, the financial and economic crisis, and active cooperation in the field of combating terrorism."
At the end of his speech, he thanked the Special Representative of the Secretary-General and the head of the Iraq Assistance Mission and its team in Baghdad for their great efforts over the whole year since May 2019, expressing Iraq’s desire to renew the mandate of the UNAMI mission for one year.
