Member of the Parliamentary Economy and Investment Committee, Ali Saadoun Al-Lami, said on Tuesday that resorting to foreign loans to bridge the budget deficit is a conspiracy to bankrupt Iraq and destroy its economy.
Al-Lami said in a press interview that "resorting to external loans from the World Bank to fill the budget deficit, is a conspiracy by some countries in order to bankrupt Iraq and destroy the Iraqi economy," noting that "there are people who are complicit in tying and dumping Iraq with these loans."
Al-Lami added, "The government should work to collect revenues through ports, customs and communications and reduce some unnecessary trips, and then the sums saved will be sufficient to cover the deficit, before resorting to borrowing."
