Australian ambassador supports taking Iraq out of Chapter VII

KARBALA, Feb. 29 (AKnews) – The Australian ambassador to Baghdad said her country supports the withdrawal of Iraq from the United Nation’s Chapter VII sanctions, adding that she visited Karbala to discuss investment opportunities.

Lyndall Sachs said in a statement during her visit on Monday: “Australia strongly supports the withdrawal of Iraq from Chapter VII, especially that it applied all its obligations by the International Security Council and the United Nations.”

A decision on Chapter VII is expected to be made by the UN Security Council in June.

Sachs continued: “My country has good relations with Iraq, in particular [because] it received the largest Iraqi communities during their migration from the country during the former regime and they’re currently residing in Australia and have good jobs.”

The ambassador visited Karbala to hear about potential investment opportunities in the province.

“Many Australian companies want to enter the Karbala investment market, including agricultural companies specialized in strategic crops considering that Australia is a leading country in the field of agriculture, especially desert farming,” she said. “In Karbala there are large areas of lands that can be developed.”

Sachs said however that some Australian companies are concerned about the unstable security situation in the area.

Karbala’s governor Amal al-Din al-Har said such concerns are unnecessary.

“The fear of the security situation in Iraq isn’t true considering that many of the Iraqi provinces including Karbala are witnessing a stable security situation. The visit of the Australian ambassador to the province includes some of the important tourist places along with field examination about the investment opportunities.”

Governor Har pointed out that Sachs came to discuss the formation of joint committees between the province and some areas of Australia. He specifically mentioned the opening of private sector banks and the adoption of agricultural projects.

“Many of the ambassadors of European countries want to visit our province to get informed about the projects that can be implemented. We hosted earlier the Czech ambassador and there are also unexpected future visits in this area,” he said.
