Antonio Guterres, Secretary - General of the Ninth United Nations, officially took office on Sunday, replacing Ban Ki - moon.
A statement by the United Nations Mission in Iraq [UNAMI], that " the new Secretary General, who witnessed the suffering of the most vulnerable people on the ground, either in refugee camps or in war zones, is determined to make the human dignity at the heart of his work, and work as a peace broker, and build bridges communication, and promoting reform and innovation. "
He served Guterres before his election as Secretary-General post ofUnited Nations High Commissioner for Refugees ( UNHCR ) in the period from June 2005 to December 2015 , heads one of the leading humanitarian organizations in the world during some of the most serious crises of homelessness that the world has seen in decades, it has resulted in conflicts in Syria and Iraq, and crises in southern Sudan and the Republic of Central Yemen Africa, to a large increase in the activities of UNHCR as the number of homeless has increased due to conflict and persecution of 38 million in 2005 to more than 60 million in 2015.
prior to joining the Commission, Guterres spent more than 20 years in government and the public service sector work, has served as prime minister of Portugal from 1995 to 2002, and it was during that period involved with determination in international efforts to resolve the crisis in East Timor.
And carried out in his capacity as President of the European Council in early 2000 played a leading role in the adoption of the "Lisbon Agenda for growth and jobs", and co-chaired the first summit between the EU and Africa, and was a member of the Council of State of Portugal from 1991 to 2002.
He was elected Guterres a member of the Portuguese parliament in 1976, where he held the post for 17 years, and during that period, the parliamentary Committee on economy, Finance and planning chaired, also presided over the post of the parliamentary committee for regional administration and municipal environmental councils, and also led the parliamentary group of his party.

He served as group vice president from 1992 to 1999 and co-chaired by the African Commission, and the Development Committee at a later date. He served as chairman of the group in the period from 1999 to mid-2005, and in addition to that, the Board of Portugal for the refugees and the Portuguese Society for consumers foundations [DECO], and in the early seventies, he served as President of the Assembly undertake the implementation of social development in the slums projects in Lisbon.

Guterres was born in Lisbon in 1949, and graduated from the Institute [nstituto Superior Técnico] bachelor 's degree in engineering, and is fluent in Portuguese, English, French and Spanish, is married to Catarina de Almeida won Pinto, Deputy Mayor of Cultural Affairs in Lisbon, with two children in addition to son his wife, and his three grandchildren.
