Iraq announces willingness of delivery of stolen Kuwaiti archives

Iraq informed, Wednesday, Portugal, which chairs the Security Council, his willingness to hand over part of Kuwaiti officials from the archives of the State of Kuwait, which was looted during the invasion in 1990 in implementation of Security Council resolutions related.

He said the Iraqi ambassador to the United Nations, Hamid al-Bayati, in a letter to the President of the Security Council that it had seen “Twilight News”, “Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari sent a letter to the Kuwaiti embassy in Baghdad, according to the presence of 136 of the tapes (microfilm) of the archive’s official newspaper (Kuwait Today) Kuwaiti official. “
He noted that “the tapes in good condition and ready for delivery,” explaining that those tapes, “handed over to Iraqi citizens and Iraqi Foreign Ministry.”

It is said that Iraq is still suffering from the consequences of Saddam’s invasion of Kuwait, as it pays a lot of money to fund reparations to Kuwait for the invasion, and allocated 5% of its petroleum revenues to the compensation that goes mostly to Kuwait, as Kuwait, Iraq is demanding return of some lost property, including the National Archives of Kuwait.

Al-Bayati said “I am honored to inform you that the Iraqi government has implemented the recommendations contained in the report of the Secretary-General of the United Nations issued last June, was obtained the approval of Iraqi authorities to set up a committee chaired by a representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to coordinate efforts related to the National Archives of Kuwait.”

He continued, that the committee “composed of members representing the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers and the Ministries of Finance and Defense, Interior, Justice, Higher Education and Scientific Research and the Central Bank of Iraq to be a member of the rank of director general or higher,” noting that the Committee will be responsible for the coordination of efforts related to the National Archives of Kuwait.
