UN Sec-General calls to end tension in Iraq

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq: UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, has expressed anxiety towards the current political tension in Iraq, calling on all parties in the country to “act together, in order to settle their differences peacefully andthrough constructive dialogue and presenting some concessions, along with the division of authorities and the independence of the Judiciary”.

The UN Secretary-General said, in a statement published on the UN’s Official Satellite position on Wednesday, that “continued differences are contributing to the increase in the security deterioration in Iraq, which has witnessed a series of explosions in the past period”.

“It is necessary to settle the political issues in a way that respects the Constitution, and its articles serving the division of authorities, the sovereignty of the law and the independence of the Judiciary” the statement added.

“The taking over of the complete security control by the Iraqi government, following the withdrawal of the American Forces at the beginning of the New Year, is a chance to strengthen the democratically-elected institutions in the country,” he said, confirming that the UN Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI) “is ready to consult with the Iraqi Leaderships and present necessary assistance for them.”
