Mystery of lost Iraqi money to be solved

BAGHDAD, Feb. 7 (AKnews) – The government is trying to reclaim money that was transferred abroad before the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003.

Baghdad claims to have proof that money was transferred within and out of the country under different names by the former regime, and will begin attempts to reclaim the unknown amounts next March.

The Finance Committee of the Council of Representatives and the Ministry of Finance will work together to reclaim what they consider to be foreign debt.

However, some countries to do not recognize such a notion.

Committee member Najiba Najib told AKnews that the Finance Committee will meet with the Director of Public Debt in the Ministry of Finance to learn more about how to return Iraqi funds at home and abroad as soon as possible.

“The Ministry of Finance will have an active role in managing the return of Iraqi funds, where it will employ all its efforts while the Finance Commission will supervise the project,” he said.

“The Iraqi funds are at risk abroad due to delays in returning them and finding a suitable way for protection.”

She added: “Informants will get financial prizes if they provided information about the stolen money.”
