The US House of Representatives Foreign Relations Committee called on the Iraqi government to protect the right of the people to protest and peaceful assembly and hold accountable all those who use force and violence against protesters and journalists.
In a joint statement with Republican Rep. Michael McCall, chairmanof the committee, Elliott Engel, a Democrat, urged the Iraqi government to reverse the decision to shut down the Internet and lift restrictions on social media platforms.
He also called on Baghdad to "ensure that all political parties, ethnic groups and communities live peacefully in a strong, sovereign and prosperous Iraq."
Internet access in Baghdad and most of the provinces has been cut off since Monday night amid fears among protesters that they might try to isolate them again to strike demonstrations such as the first wave of unprecedented violence.
